What did you do this past week?

I spent this past week working for the company I’m interning during this fall. I also organized my room and classes by making a schedule of everything I need to do, as well as getting all the books and materials I needed. Towards the end of the week and the weekend, I started reading for this class and my other classes. I must keep up with my readings throughout the semester to stay on top of things.

What’s in your way?

Overall, this class seems like it will be very demanding, but very doable if I keep up with the readings and study throughout the semester. I’m very excited to start with the projects and learning new tools I’ve never used before, the only thing that might make the experience somewhat less enjoyable will be the daily in-class quizzes, they seem like they will be putting a lot of pressure as I will not only have to read everything with great detail but make sure not to forget those details that could potentially hurt my grade. Hopefully preparing for the quizzes don’t take too much energy from my mind that I could otherwise be using for the projects or the tests.

What will you do next week?

Homework, projects, readings, and studying will start to pick up speed next week so I will follow my schedule that I organized this week to stay on top of things and make sure I break up my readings so they don’t accumulate and come prepared for class every day. I will also start learning and messing around with new tools and programs to become familiar with them, especially those Professor Downing mentioned on his website.

What are your expectations for the class?

I expect to be immersed in a new and different learning environment. The lectures themselves will be more interactive than any other regular computer science class, Professor Downing seems to engage with us one-to-one during lecture and that keeps students more attentive. I believe the daily in-class quizzes will be challenging and keeping up with the readings will be crucial in performing well in those assessments. I expect to learn a different set of skills in class than from the projects outside of class, as I’m sure I will constantly stumble upon challenges that will make me learn new things.

What’s my pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

My tip-of-the-week is to pay close attention to your working/studying habits. Most of us CS students have a very heavy workload in our schedules, make sure you take regular breaks and avoid long sessions of being sitting down. It may also help if you change your studying environment every once in a while, this helps the brain focus better and not get very tired. Also, exercising and eating healthy is beneficial to your brain!
