8 Latinx Type Foundries on Adobe Fonts

As a Latinx Designer, I often don’t see myself represented in the design community. I made this list out of necessity while redesigning my portfolio. I wanted to design with typefaces that culturally aligned with myself, and reflect it in my own personal branding. These are some of the type foundries doing amazing work in the Latinx community.

1. Latinotype

Latinotype was founded in 2007 in Chile by Luciano Vergara, Daniel Hernández and Miguel Hernández.

Alegreya Ht by Huerta Tipográfica

2. Huerta Tipográfica

Huerta Tipográfica is an Argentinian Type foundry that was founded in 2009, during the first year of the MA of Type Design in the University of Buenos Aires (CDT-UBA).

It is formed by Juan Pablo del Peral, Carolina Giovagnoli, Sol Matas and Andrés Torresi, all of whom are Graphic and Type designers

3. Typefolio

Typefolio is a independent Brazilian typefoundry, established by the designer Marconi Lima. Its foundation was motivated by the desire of offering to the international market typographical projects that prioritizes the quality in technique, functionality and aesthetics.

Arya by TipoType

4. TipoType

Tipotype is the first foundry to call Uruguay home. Founded in 2009 by Fernando Díaz, Vicente Lamónaca and Martin Sommaruga with the mission of creating contemporary typefaces and also a platform for type designers to easily commercialize their work.

Dilemma by Sudtipos

5. Sudtipos

Sudtipos is a collective Argentinian type foundry. New blood, new attitude. A joint venture of professional designers with lots of expertise in different areas like branding, packaging design, corporate identity, television and new media. “The foundry, or collective as we prefer to designate it, started because of that — packaging, editorial or brand designers making fonts for real designers” During the recent years Sudtipos received numerous awards in the most important type competitions and their fonts were used by the biggest brands.

6. Plau

Run by Rodrigo Saiani, Plau is a design studio based in Rio de Janeiro helping shape companies’ visual and digital identities.

Jana Thork by Outras Fontes

7. Outras Fontes

Outras Fontes is an independent digital type foundry based in Vitória, Brazil. It was started in 2006 and it is currently managed by Ricardo Esteves Gomes, a graphic/type designer, professor and researcher. The name “Outras Fontes” simply means Other Fonts in Portuguese. Our work is focused both on developing brand new multilingual typefaces — that you can see in our retail font library — and also in designing exclusive custom typefaces and lettering.

Urbana by César Puertas

8. César Puertas

César Puertas is a graphic designer from Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1999) and Type designer from the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague (2009). He has worked as book and web designer and more recently as typeface designer. He has taught typographic design at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano (2005–2007) and is an ADG Colombia co-founder and active member.
