What is Lollapalooza?

Lollapalooza was Created in 1991 by Perry Farrell, the frontman of the alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction.

It was originally intended to be a disruptive “farewell tour” for the band, rejecting everything mainstream and creating a space where counter-culture could be celebrated. Back in the 90s, when boy bands and pop music were beginning to dominate the scene, this was a welcome change. But without a headlining act in 1998, the festival was threatened with permanent closure.

When the tour once again tanked during the 2003–2004 season, Farrell decided to rejig the event as a destination festival in Chicago, one of his favorite cities in America. Since then, Lollapalooza has become an iconic annual four-day extravaganza held in Grant Park every summer.
