Review: I could not get through a “part” in this book without finding some sort of error. To put this into perspective there are about 50 parts in this book. It feels like the author put no effort into proof reading their work. Overall this book irritated me more then informed me about the emt role.

Review: Practice Questions Only Review
While this is available as an audiobook bundle, I only received a PDF ARC copy of the practice questions when I chose this book at one of my favorite book review sites. I wish I had access to the audiobook. While I am not an EMT, nor will I become one, I am a registered nurse, and I thought the practice questions were well done. The author breaks this down into broad sections, like airway/respiration and trauma, that EMTs need to have a solid grounding in, both general medical information and what they need to know out in the field. The questions are straightforward and clear; I wish the questions on the NCLEX had such clarity! The answer comes right after the question, with a relatively detailed explanation that will add to your understanding and knowledge. At least as far as the practice question book goes, this is well done.

I received a free copy of the book portion of the bundle, but that did not affect my review.

After ripping my fellow reviewers for what I perceived as unfairly harsh criticism, I have to concede that the quality of this program is truly atrocious, and the reason I still give it two stars instead of one (and am still determined to complete my listening) is that I’m unaware of anything better currently available on the market in its format (audio), length and scope, lamentably.
It’s bad enough that the first volume is full of editing errors, repeated words, even entire repeated segments lasting several minutes. As other reviewers have noted, in the second volume the reader seems to have no clue as to the pronunciation of dozens of common medical terms. It is no exaggeration to say that not a single minute goes by without some cringe-worthy pronunciation error, completely distracting to the otherwise adequate content.
The fault lies with the producers for neglecting to execute any editing or proofing of the verbal performance. Any real-world EMT, or for that matter, middle-school English teacher could have set this right with one hour of application. But the producers cut that corner, to their disgrace.
As a tail-end baby boomer myself, I can’t help but wonder if this is a deficiency of a handful of individuals, or if it is endemic to the latest generation. We seem to be handing bachelor’s degrees to students who couldn’t pass the 8th grade exit exam of a couple of generations ago, or as Charles McGill of Better Call Saul might put it, machine guns to chimpanzees.

I am compelled to write this review in light of what I consider unfairly low marks by other reviewers.
I usually avoid like the plague any product with a “foot” in the reviews — a foot defined as one-star reviews comprising 10% or more of all reviews. I took a chance on this one, with no remorse.
Yes, there is room for improvement in the editing, including occasional repeated words — splicing errors — that make the reader almost sound like he is stuttering.
But these are occasional and minor distractions to what is, overall, an excellent product. The lessons are well-structured, the content substantial. The questions and proposed multiple-choice answers each serve as a pretext for a more in-depth discussion of the topic. And the opportunity to listen to and review this material in my car during my commute is, to quote a famous credit card commercial, priceless.
The one crack-up in my opinion was a question on a complex, multi-step procedure where each of the steps is presented in a different order for each of the answer choices A, B, C, D and E, taking on the order of 5 full minutes just to present the question and all of the options. Seriously? That’s one that probably works better in the print edition. Forgiven.

Review: Ok, to be very specific:

- The parts narrated by Bruce Enrietto weren’t too bad. His was the practice questions part, it was the part I listened to first. I would give it a 4 or 5 stars for content, and a 3 for narration. Bruce mispronounces a few things, and there are parts where he clears his throat, and other parts where he reads the first part of a sentence, does it incorrectly, and then re-starts reading the same sentence. Those obvious mistakes should have been edited out! It’s as though there was no attempt whatsoever to edit the audio at all.

- The second part of the audio, what I guess was the educational/review information, was narrated by Austin Stoler. This part was a joke. I guess the information could be given a 3, 4 or even 5 star rating. But I could never accurately rate the content, the narration was so terrible I couldn’t listen to it. I tried multiple times, but you couldn’t listen for 60 seconds without some god awful mispronounced words. That’s not hyperbole, it really was that bad! They were so bad that sometimes I was left confused and trying to figure out what he was talking about, other times it was done over and over again to the point where I would get frustrated and simply couldn’t take it anymore. I had to shut it off. I listened to the entire practice questions section. But with the A-Z review. after trying several times to force myself to listen to it, I never even made it 30 minutes in.

Whoever was responsible for the audio portion should be ashamed of themselves. It was clear they either didn’t bother to even try, or they were so completely ignorant of how to pronounce the most basic medical terms, they should not have taken this projection to begin with. Or they should have asked for help. Or they should have selected narrators who had at least a 12th grade understanding of anatomy and physiology.

I’ve read and listened to a lot of books, this is easily, by far, the worst I have ever listened to. As a narrator, I will avoid Austin Stoler like the plague.
