Title: An interesting theory of how the Ark of the Covenant may have gotten to Ethiopia

Review: My second reading: 2017.
I first read this in 1994, and I thought it was grand. That it made a good case too. Since then, however, author Graham Hancock has sort of one off the deep end. So, with my second reading, what would I find?
I find Hancockās travelogues interesting. I find his analysis of sculpture at Chartres, his exegesis of the grail literature, and his reading of history reasonable, supportable, and interesting. I donāt think he makes any logical leap too far. Is it a far-fetched theory? Sure. (But this is a book about an object most people would today consider a myth. Hancock himself thinks itās a magic box made with some unknown civilizationās technology by Moses.)
Spoiler. The theory is: (a) the Ark was spirited out of the Temple in the reign of evil Manasseh; (b) righteous priests took it to Elephantine Island in the Nile in Egypt, where a number of Jews were already living; Ā© Josiah reorganizes Judaism and cleanses the Temple, asking the priests to return the Ark, but Jeremiah hints that it is gone; (d) in the 400s BC, the native Egyptians expelled the Jews from Elephantine, so the Ark was moved southward to the Lake Tana region of Ethiopia, where some Jews may already have migrated; (e) these Jews were the ancestors of the Falasha (black Jews) of Ethiopia, and later would influence the Judaic character of Ethiopian Christianity; (f) eventually, after some movements, the Ark ended up in Axum under Christian protection; (g) Knights Templar in Jerusalem, looking perhaps for the Ark, made contact with Ethiopian Christians, and traveled there to help the Christians fight Muslim invaders; (h) the Templars left Templar crosses across parts of Ethiopia, and left clues to the location of the Ark in the Grail literature of Wolfram von Eschenbach and ChrĆ©tien de Troyes.
That, in some twists and turns, is the book. It makes good sense. The late Stuart Munro-Hay in <i>The Quest for the Ark of the Covenant</i> take some issue with Hancockās research and conclusions, but he does not offer a point-by-point demolition of Hancockās book. Like Munro-Hay, others in the scholarly community call it drivel, but Hancock does make some points that need consideration. For instance, the TemplarāEthiopia connection, the GrailāArk connection, the JerusalemāElephantineāFalasha connection deserve more attention. I think, in most places, Hancock makes a good case.
Some caveats. If you believe in the literal truth of the Bible, Hancock does not. He thinks the Ark is a magic box done with ancient technological trickery. (He doesnāt come out and say it, but perhaps radioactive trickery.) You see the birth in this book of Hancockās later works. Hancock posits that Moses, as architect of the Ark (not God), was the inheritor of some advanced ancient wisdom from a lost civilization. Here he places it some place equidistant from Egypt and Mesopotamia and in the distant past. Later, beginning with <i>Fingerprints of the Gods</i>, he conjures up some Atlantis-like fallen civilization (first in Antarctica, and later elsewhere).
A great page-turner for a non-fiction book, and well worth the cheap price you can probably find copies for.

Title: Hancockās Psychotic Break with Reality

Review: Donāt get me wrong with the subject of this reviewās title line. Hancock does a fantastic piece of research for this book. I was glad to see it is in Kindle so that I can again revisit it and this time organized my notes when I write my own work on the Ark of the Covenant and how it cause Hancock to have a psychological break with reality. If you go to his official website and views all the books he has written you will see that the SIGN AND THE SEAL begins his foray into the occult sciences. Previous to this Hancock had written book on Journalistic Research in the mainstream press and publications. Now in this book he virtually trashes his reputation as a respectable journalist and goes for the occult, which is anathema to the mainstream. It is my contention that his psychological break took place during the Ethiopian Civil War in which he became over friendly with a brutal dictator. He obtain a commission to write a propaganda coffee table book on the sites of Ethiopia.
Hancock psychological break is not only shown in going from mainstream thought to investigation of occult sciences but it is also shown in his divorce with his first wife Carol. She stayed with him for the ten years of his researching the SIGN AND THE SEAL and then he divorces her. See the first two sentences of his Acknowledgements. In modern times this is not a strange event but what is strange is that he married a Black African Woman (Princess?) as if he was imitating the King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba relationship. Again this may not sound strange but the symbolism of Solomon and Sheba is a rehashing of the distinguishing of LIGHT and DARKNESS seen in the first chapter of Genesis. Solomon represents the Emperor of the Sun and Sheba is symbolic of the Darkest (mysterious) Africa as the Ego-conscious has the infinity of the unconscious mind behind it. The unconscious mind wells up images and Hancock wife is a photographer and the Ego-conscious representing male who dispenses the LOGOS (textual materials in a book).

Title: Credible, Factual and Entertaining.

Review: I was introduced to Graham Hancockās work in the late 90ās with Fingerprints of the Gods. This work was his first real venture into āfringeā archeology and history. If you have seen the documentary loosely based on this work, this book will fill in a lot of the holes. As the story fleshes out, there are some interesting coincidences. He follows in the footsteps of James Bruce, an 18th century Scottish explorer who was apparently the first person to explore the claim that the Arc of the Covenant is in a church in Auxum, Ethiopia. Bruce also brought a full text of the Book of Enoch to the west for the first time in over a thousand years. Hancock found that he was distantly related to this man.
It is still very hard to believe that the Arc exists today in a small church in Ethiopia. The tales of its coming there come from āThe Glory of Kings,ā a book of scripture used only by Ethiopian Christians which was probably put together a thousand years ago or less. It seems like a wonderful improbable historical novel. Yet there is something in that church in Auxum that is prematurely aging and killing the young monks chosen for the dubious honor of being the keeper of the arc. Hancock has met three of the keepers in a period of around twenty years. These are men in their twenties who are developing thick visible cataracts from daily contact with the Arc of the Covenant. There is an account of one young monk who ran off when he found he was supposed to be the next keeper of the Arc. It is understandable; the keepers die of cancer after a few years of service.
I have to agree with the author. It is probably better that it stays where it is.
Still, who would not just a little peek at it?
