Title: Why We Should Keep Moving

Review: My first reaction was thinking; “Not another book telling me to exercise!”. However, I found this book surprisingly enjoyable and informative. Professor Lieberman uses historical and anthropological perspectives which I found really interesting. Overall, Lieberman gives the reader an understandable, well written discussion about why and how we should exercise, and also explains why most of us don’t really feel the need to. This book is very broad ranging, as Lieberman tackles numerous controversial topics concerning human physical activity. Lieberman avoids getting bogged down with the usual intellectual squabbles among scientists as he offers wisdom based on science, including his research, and common sense. I learned many interesting insights, including:
1) How human evolution gave us instincts which lead to desires today to overeat and under exercise.
2) Understanding the myths vs the actual science about the health benefits of exercise.
3) The evolutionary sources of humans’ performance in sports, especially running.
4) The importance of managing sleep and stress, as part of overall health.
5) How to create a sensible exercise program to promote better health.

Title: Well-written look at exercise from evolutionary and anthropological standpoints

Review: This book examines many myths or ideas about exercise from the viewpoints of evolution and anthropology. The author is at his best when he tells his stories of visiting the Hadza people or when whipping out a chart to make a point. His occasional attempts at humor are good.

At times however, his writing would benefit from increased succinctness and his identical format for each chapter, while adding clarity, also adds an overbearing sense of repetitiveness by the end.

His science is sound, which is sometimes rare in books about exercise these days. His conclusions, however, are nothing surprising and very general. The journey to get to them, however, is moderately entertaining and sufficiently logical and scientific that some will hopefully be inspired to make some lifestyle changes for the better.

I think someone qualified needs to do a companion book on diet because the diet fads these days have caused huge confusion about what it means to eat healthy.

Review: I’m going to go out on a limb here, having read only the first half of the book, and give it a rave. Lieberman writes better than most anthropologists I’ve read (he even uses “myriad” correctly). His work is based on extensive primary research, on himself and others. He deals with the evolutionary history of exercise. He explodes a lot of myths, both about exercise and the lack thereof, and is especially good on “laziness.” At the same time, if you don’t exercise, or are looking for an easy path to fitness, this book is not for you. Mainly, if you do exercise, and if you really like to exercise, this book will go a long way toward explaining why. As someone who gets edgy, fidgety if he doesn’t exercise an hour each day, I really appreciate that. But don’t be fooled. The guy is a scientist, and, like the great S.J. Gould, he refuses to dumb down his work. Prepare to use your brain. Highly recommended.

Title: Less about the ‘how’ and more about the ‘why’

Review: Lieberman makes a strong case for exercise and to do mostly cardio.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to convince themselves to start or to any regular
exerciser who isn’t doing much or any aerobic exercise.

Though mentioned at the end, he downplays the role of insulin in fat gain and disease. All irrelevant if you’re able to jog, I suppose, but “run to get fit” is a slippery slope. Anyone who has studied optimal gait mechanics and watched a marathon can tell you that proper form is hard to come by. People are not only falling over the finish line, but off the starting line, too. Not very promising if you’re significantly overweight and looking to gain control over your weight on the road or on a treadmill.

This is not exactly a “run to get fit” book but he does seem to present jogging as a panacea, at least his own, while subtlety downplaying other forms of exercise. The book starts off seemingly written by two different people: the professor and the jogger.

That being said, an excellent book, very readable, and full of many gems.

Title: EXTREMELY WELL WRITTEN AND ENGAGING

Review: First and foremost, I love this book! It’s hilarious, delightful, and entertaining while also being intelligent and informative.

But when I hit this sentence, I realized that the book might not be for everyone: “Okay, so exercise is paradoxical: salubrious but abnormal, intrinsically free but highly commodified, a source of pleasure and health but a cause of discomfort, guilt, and opprobrium.” I include the sentence so you can see if this reading level is within your comfort zone. (Most of the book is easier to read, but clearly the author doesn’t mind flexing his vocabulary muscle.)

This book addresses the age-old question of why most of us hate exercise when exercise is what we evolved to do. It will help you understand yourself better and plan your path forward.

Title: Great book about exercise from evolutionary perspectives

Review: This book is amazing. It tells us about exercise from the evolutionary and anthropological perspectives, which never occurred to me before. In this sense, the exercise is an artificial product for people in postindustrial world. However, there are so many benefits to be active, since we are not evolved to be inactive from our gather hunter ancestors. What seems to be contradictory is that we are involved to be inactive to save energy when not necessary to do things to survive. So we have tendency to be inactive, and exercised (anxious) about to do exercise. This book also teaches me about biology, anthropology and sone useful prospective about exercise in general. Highly recommend to people who are interested in exercise, evolution and anthropology. I also like the language of the book, which is fun and effortless to read.

Title: We Aren’t Lazy!

Review: Interesting study of how humans move from across the globe, accounting for culture and geography. It debunks several conceptions of populations outside of the Western industrialized world. Mostly non-judgemental whether you exercise or not. Easy to understand, and very enjoyable read.
