Olivia Rodrigo, a worldwide musical sensation, is most commonly known for her viral song ‘Drivers License,’ which took TikTok by storm. After releasing her debut album Sour in 2021, Olivia wasted no time and started working on her next album, Guts, which is set to be released on September 8th, 2023.

On June 14th, Olivia announced her new single ‘Vampire,’ which was released on June 30th As expected, ‘Vampire’ is a catchy and easy-to-sing-along song with its constantly changing pace, making it appeal to a wide audience of listeners. The song combines elements of a sad breakup song and a rage-filled breakup anthem. Olivia’s talent as a performer shines through, and her emotional connection to the song is evident in her powerful vocals. Particularly in the chorus, where she sings the lines, “I used to think I was smart, but you made me look so naive,” and “the way you sold me for parts as you sunk your teeth into me,” she brings out the raw emotions of the song. The music video, with its scene-changing lights, symbolises the feeling of artificiality in the relationship or the insincerity of the love her ex felt for her.

However I think that Olivia could explore a wider range of themes in her music, for example, by writing more songs about change and being twenty. While ‘Good 4 U’ resonated with many listeners, both ‘Vampire’ and ‘Good 4 U’ start as slow, sad break up songs that progress into rage. I’ve found that most of Olivia’s songs are about her going into a situation and emerging out of it into a new person with a better perspective on life. While the song would definitely be a good song to scream into your pillow with, I still found the song a little too sad.

I really wish Olivia would focus more on producing songs that are more fun and upbeat. While I appreciate her emotional vocals and the slow melodies, sometimes it can really bring my mood down. I genuinely believe that if Olivia started writing songs about her happiness and the fun side of life, she would attract a much larger audience. I think that Olivia has so much more to offer as an artist and that if she could showcase her happier side and share her positive energy through her music, it would be a game-changer for her career.

However, Olivia’s ambition to follow in the footsteps of Taylor Swift is understandable, considering Taylor’s success in the music industry. However, it’s essential for her to recognise her unique voice and artistic perspective. By embracing her individuality and forging her own path, Olivia has the potential to bring something different to the table.

Upon announcing the release of ‘Vampire,’ Olivia’s social media following skyrocketed, gaining over two hundred thousand followers on Instagram and Twitter even before the song was out. Once released, it quickly climbed to become the number one played song on Spotify within hours. It also became the most used audio on TikTok and Instagram, inspiring numerous fans to recreate her music video and outfits in their own posts. Olivia took to Instagram to express her gratitude and appreciation for all the love and support.

As with many of Olivia’s songs, her fans have been trying to decipher the inspiration behind ‘Vampire.’ According to Cosmopolitan, a significant number of her fans speculate that the song is about her ex-boyfriend, Zack Bia. However, another portion believes the song might be about singer Joshua Bassett.

However, Olivia Rodrigo’s single ‘Vampire’ is already a massive hit, captivating audiences with its catchy melody and emotional depth. As we await the release of her album ‘Guts,’ Olivia Rodrigo promises to continue to bring her refreshing outlook on life and authentic style to the music industry.
