Comic book heroes have nearly been around for 90 years and in the early “Golden age” of comic books all the plotlines are extremely similar. The hero saving the girl he loves from an evil doer because no matter how ridiculous or stupid the the villain is like the old batman villain “Crazy Quilt” it’s been perceived that women can never save themselves from the evil they have gotten themselves in too. And the idea of the woman saving the hero?! Get outta here that could NEVER happen….. Or could it? In the CW Original tv series Arrow based off characters from DC Comics that very obstacle is tackled and shows that women are more than capable and powerful enough to save the male superhero from the evil clutches of one of his super villains.

First off, In the show Arrow oliver queen is a street vigilante who wields a bow and arrow. Oliver has a gallery of villains one of them being Damien Dark in the episode “Enter the darkness” Oliver is set out on a task to capture Damien Dark and stop him from destroying Star City. In the episode Oliver is infiltrating Dark’s base and everything seems to be going well until Oliver slips up and gets trapped in Dark’s base. And the only person that knows that Oliver is over there is Felicity who is Oliver’s on and off again love interest and also communicates with Oliver through tech in his suit and is an informant for Oliver to make sure he knows everything that is going on around him. Once Felicity finds out that Oliver is in trouble she right away decides to take action and on her own infiltrate the base that Oliver is stuck in. The show is predominantly masculine driven like most comic book/superhero tv shows but with Felicity deciding to infiltrate the base by herself to go save Oliver is a turn in another direction of the show that we have not seen yet. Felicity successfully gets into Dark’s base that Oliver is trapped in and then proceeds to save him and get him out of the cage that Oliver is trapped in. Although Felicity’s brave and bold decisions does have an asterix next to it because Damien Dark and his henchman exited the building because they made it self destruct after 20 minutes leaving Oliver there but Felicity does save Oliver and even use such language as “I’m the hero now” jokingly to Oliver. With her amazing computer skills Felicity disables the bomb that’s going to go off just in time successfully saving oliver.

In conclusion, the show does take a bold move and reverses the roles of the two main characters and for once has a woman save the man from the villain. In more and more tv shows this has been a recurrent theme that women are tougher than they look and this tv show executes a good job at showing that women are just a tough as the men that claim to call themselves superheroes.
