How to Keep Kids Calm During Severe Storms

Living in the Midwest of the USA, our household is no stranger to the threat of life-threatening storms and tornadoes. This has certainly been the case over the past few weeks with severe weather ripping through the states.

The threat of the darkening skies, violent wind, pounding hail, flood-inducing rain, and sirens screaming for city residents to seek shelter causes a rush of adrenaline that can make the hair on the arms of even the bravest adult stand on end. Now imagine the intense fears these storms stir in a child.

Whether you live in an area prone to tornadoes, or you are faced with other natural weather threats such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or snow storms, the role of a parent or caregiver remains the same. We are the ones who are responsible for protecting our children while teaching them one of the most critical skills in any emergency — stay calm.

Here are some tips I have learned along the way for keeping my children calm during severe weather.
