Seti I, also known as Seti the Great, was one of the most prominent pharaohs of ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom period. He was the father of Ramses II, who is considered one of Egypt’s greatest pharaohs. Seti I had several children, and his grandchildren went on to leave their own legacies. Let’s explore some of the notable grandchildren of Seti I and their accomplishments:
- Merenptah: Merenptah was the thirteenth son of Seti I and the successor to Ramses II. He ruled Egypt for about ten years and is best known for his military campaigns against the Libyans and the Sea Peoples. Merenptah is also famous for his funerary temple in Thebes, which features the well-known “Israel Stela” that mentions the Israelites.
- Bintanath: Bintanath was a daughter of Seti I and the sister of Ramses II. She held the title of “Great Royal Wife” and married her brother Ramses II, which was a common practice among the Egyptian pharaohs. Bintanath is known for her role as a queen and her involvement in the royal court, but her specific accomplishments are not well-documented.
- Khaemweset: Khaemweset was the fourth son of Ramses II and the grandson of Seti I. He is often regarded as one of the most famous and accomplished of Seti I’s grandchildren. Khaemweset served as the High Priest of Ptah in Memphis and was known for his interest in Egypt’s ancient history and architecture. He played a crucial role in the preservation and restoration of many ancient Egyptian monuments, including the famous Sphinx and the pyramid complex at Giza.
- Meritamen: Meritamen was one of the daughters of Ramses II and the granddaughter of Seti I. She held the title of “Great Royal Wife” and married her father Ramses II, following the tradition of sibling marriage. Meritamen is particularly known for her involvement in the royal court and her role as a queen.
- Nebettawy: Nebettawy was another daughter of Ramses II and the granddaughter of Seti I. Like her sister Meritamen, Nebettawy married her father Ramses II. She held the title of “God’s Wife of Amun” and played a significant religious role in the kingdom. Nebettawy is known for her depiction in reliefs and statues, which depict her participating in religious rituals.
