Psychological depression; economic depression.
Not that there’s any simple causal relationship. But there are parallels.
Psychological depression often involves hunkering down, putting up barriers, sinking within oneself.
Economic depressions also involve hunkering down: firms cut back production and lay off workers; households stop spending; governments erect trade barriers.
The end of the economic depression by itself wouldn’t solve Paul’s depression. But would it have given him enough so he could then get by with a little help from his friends?
A moving and challenging vignette.
