Best of Five: Top Parent-Friendly Restaurants in Edinburgh

What defines ‘parent-friendly’?

Parent-friendly (as defined by the author) is a place where you feel comfortable to bring your kids but it’s primary purpose is not FOR children. It’s for adults, who may or may not have children.

Whether you’ve got a baby perma-attached to your body, you’re go-karting a pushchair up and down hills, or dragging a small child by the sticky hand to your destination, Edinburgh’s terrain and architecture can be rather unforgiving to hungry parents.

These are my top restaurants in Edinburgh that I feel tick my ‘parent-friendly’ (and delicious food) criteria:

1. Civerinos

At night this pizzeria is popular with the cool kidz, but don’t be fooled. This Italian restaurant is run by parent Michele Civerino: kids are not repelled by the food, you can get a filling & delicious meal, and the staff are super welcoming and accommodating to families.

2. Contini — George Street

To most Edinburgh-ers, this may be an odd choice to have on this parent-friendly list.

“Isn’t it the go-to breakfast meeting spot for Edinburgh’s businessmen?”

It’s well-known that Contini is probably not the best place to go for a secret business meeting or to conduct a conspicuous job interview, but what’s not so well-known is that SUPER parent friendly.

Not only do they have high-chairs and a kids menu, they even provide a selection of nappies in the baby-changing room for that rare occassion you decide ‘one nappy is enough’ to go out for the day.

3. Saiko Kitchen

Saiko Kitchen (located in Marchmont) may be a small player but it DEFINITELY hits the ‘parent-friendly’ vibe.

All food is freshly-made, and the menu satisfies YOUR need for a take-out, whilst the kids can tuck into tasty noodles without the nasties.

There is no alcohol sold on site, so you can bring your kids without the worry of patrons getting lairy.

There are high-chairs and crayons on hand to help you out, and staff are super-friendly & helpful.

4. The Pantry

It’s like this place was MADE for parents in mind:

Comfort food for the sleep-deprived — check.

Healthy but popular kids menu — check.

Play-pen within the restaurant — check.

Staff well trained in impromptu buggy management — check.

The only problem with The Pantry is that it is the Edinburgh parents’ worst kept secret. Expect queues out the door for weekend brunch, as The Pantry doesn’t take bookings.

5. Harajuku Kitchen

Now this may seem like a rogue choice, but I’ve taken my toddler here on a few occasions and have been impressed…and not just with the food.

The sushi offering in Edinburgh is certainly growing, but needs to lose the hip, ostentatious vibe.

Parents love sushi too!

Easily accessible with a buggy, high-chairs on hand, and plenty of delicious rice & noodle dishes that will satisfy tender taste palettes.
