Different Types of Building Products, Its Properties, and Uses in Construction

Building products can be categorized as any material that is used for construction purposes or house building. Some of the most common types of building materials used in construction are wood, cement, aggregates, metals, bricks, concrete, and clay. These decisions are based on the cost adequacy for structural ventures.

Types of building materials used in construction

· Natural Construction Materials

Construction materials are generally categorized as natural and synthetic. Materials that are unprocessed or minimally processed are termed as natural materials, such as timber or glass. Synthetic materials include plastics and petroleum-based paints. Both have their uses. However, natural materials have greater usage.

· Rocks

Rocks have been a part of the construction sector for building a strong foundation for a long period. Rocks are viewed as the longest enduring structure material accessible and are readily available. There are many types of rock throughout, the world all with different attributes such as granite, slate, basalt, etc.

· Bricks and Blocks

Currently, bricks are widely used for wall construction, particularly as an ornamental outer wall surface. Clay Bricks are formed by pressing wet clay or shale into molds, then drying and firing them in kilns. In commercial manufacture, they are prepared by extruding clay through a die and then wire-cutting them to the proper size. Aerated concrete blocks replaced clay bricks are mainly made from a mixture of sand, lime, water, gypsum, and cement.

· Concretes

Contrary to popular belief, concrete and cement are not something very similar; cement is, in reality, a segment of concrete. High-performance concrete is comprised of three essential components: water, aggregate (rock, sand, or gravel) and Portland cement.

· Metals

Metals are used as frameworks, or as an external covering surface. Steel is an alloy whose major component is iron and is the standard choice for metal structural construction. Brass was progressively basic previously yet is typically confined to explicit uses or strength things today.
