Learning About Animal Cruelty
What is Animal Cruelty? Animal Cruelty is animal abuse or animal neglect, is the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. This definition perfectly explains the meaning behind Animal Cruelty but is it not being brought to attention. Before I started my research on this topic I had questions I wanted to find answers to. One being why is there no major punishment given by this type of action? Through the articles I have looked through individuals who take action in this mistreating only receive a small punishment, such as a fine less than two grand or serve a couple days in jail. I believe that animals are like humans and should be treated like one in a sense that they have feelings. If animal cruelty punishments are so minimal these crimes will continue to occur instead of making a difference. Given one article I came across was a man by the name of, Breck Ruddick, he was cited with animal cruelty and allowing a dog to run at large. The dog that was involved suffered from needed surgery for a broken jaw and at least six cracked teeth. In my opinion, in these situations the individual involved should make the hospital payments in return along with the citation.
As for my second question, do individuals hurt these animals for the pleasure? To answer this question I looked into scholarly sources besides news articles. With the information I gathered it said most people do not commit these crimes on purpose. In some situations some of these people do not know exactly what type of shelter there animals need. Some people will try to keep their pet under control by using cruel types of discipline. But that is not what all the articles talk about. There are some individuals who are intentionally hurting animals because they enjoy hurting things, or because it makes them feel more superior. Reason being that they are unable to take their anger on a person therefore they chose animals to get away with charge. Lastly, individuals like young children can also take action in these situations. But because they do not have the right mindset at their age hence are unable to identify what is right or wrong.
Ultimately, who are the main supporters for this topic and are against it? The main supporters and organizations I looked into were the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), this organization focuses on “the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law”. The Humane Society is another organization which has “affiliates provide hands-on care and services to more than 100,000 animals each year, and we professionalize the field through education and training for local organizations”. With these two sources I looked over they both oversee a goal/mission to spread the awareness of Animal Cruelty to making it at a minimal crime rate. Moreover, organizations like these guys are first step to making a change in our society.
