Don’t use debit cards.

A cool feature of most debit cards is you can actually run them as a credit transaction. The money comes out of your checking account, but you’re still protected by whoever issued your card. It has to do with the payment system your information is going through. Most credit card issuers have $0 liability.

I also use a credit card to get rewards, but sometimes I’m susceptible to lifestyle creep, so I still use my debit card as much as possible.
