Form W-7 is essential while applying for an IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). It is also necessary while you are applying to renew your existing number which is expiring or has already expired. An ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is being issued by the IRS to help individuals abide by the U.S. tax laws and account for tax returns and payments for those who are not eligible for Social Security number (SSN). However, it is good to keep in mind that an ITIN doesn’t authorize work in the U.S. or provide suitability for Social Security benefits.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you can identify yourself or your family members to IRS for tax-related issues, though this process is a bit complicated for non-U.S. citizens. Even so, there is no need to worry: all you need to do is apply for an ITIN and submit form W-7.

What is the required information for form w-7?

The form basically asks for the following information:

  • Your name, mailing address and, if different, foreign address,
  • Your birth date and location of birth,
  • Your country of citizenship,
  • Your foreign tax ID number (if applicable),
  • Your U.S. visa number (if applicable),
  • Other details verifying your identity.

Moreover, you will need two of the following unexpired documents, or certified copies, to endorse the details you submit on Form W-7:

  • A passport,
  • U.S. driver’s license,
  • U.S. state ID card,
  • U.S. military ID card,
  • Foreign driver’s license,
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) photo ID,
  • U.S. Department of State issued Visa,
  • Foreign voter’s registration card,
  • Civil birth certificate,
  • Medical records (for a dependent under age 6),
  • School records (for a dependent student under age 18).

In order to apply for an ITIN, both identity and foreign status must be declared on the IDs which means that the person is not a U.S. citizen. A valid passport or a certified copy of a passport is enough to prove both. If you don’t have a passport then you must submit at least two of the documents stated above.
