When there is high mineral content in your areas, such as limestone, chalk, and gypsum, the water becomes dense resulting in what we call hard water.

This phenomenon causes white, solid films to form around faucets, drains, pipes, and appliances. When left alone, the mineral deposits begin to build up, creating what we now call limescale.

The Dangers of Limescale Deposits

The minerals involved in forming limescale are intensely solid and abrasive. When it begins forming around your plumbing fixture, simply scrapping it off can cause major damages and peel ample layers around the material.

Constant occurrence of a limescale problem could lead to deterioration and early retirement of your fixtures.

Avoiding and Chemicals

There are chemicals sold in the market whose specific purpose is to clear limescale build-up from fixtures, and while some prove to be effective in getting the job done, they also leave irreparable damages to the pipeline system.

Chemicals are the Trojan Horses of plumbing. While they provide a temporary sense of relief, they also bring harm to the life of your household fixtures.

DIY Remedies

Vinegar

White vinegar is a great remedy for many plumbing issues. In the case of limestones, it can act as a gentle cleanser to remove tough deposits without damaging the surface of the fixture.

While vinegar may be acetic acid, it is a much better alternative than synthetic chemicals sold in the market.

Baking Soda and Water

By mixing three parts baking soda and one part water, you can create a paste that you can use to rub around limescale build-up. Let it sit for an hour when simply wipe it clean with a moist towel.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is also a natural acid that can be used in many plumbing problems. For limescale issues, you can either pour lemon juice in a spray bottle and spritz on the faucet, or affected fixtures, or you can soak a soft cloth with lemon juice and wrap it around the fixture. Let it sit for at least half an hour before using a fresh soft cloth to wipe it clean.

Limescale can be troublesome, especially if left alone for a long time. It can lead to clogging and even replacement of the fixture itself.

While there are many DIY options, calling a plumber when things get out of hand is the best thing to do.
