Indian Hostel Diaries:
Having lived in the family home for more than 21 years of my life in the same town with the same bunch of friends suddenly shifting to a hostel was the biggest change so far. Also it becomes quite difficult for an ambivert to make new friends and hence it had me searching the Internet. But not a single article was published on Indian Hostel Life where in everything from ragging to cleaning staff stealing your stuff takes place. So here after much courage I thought of making a series where in I start writing about my experiences in the hostel. However difficult it may look in the start they are legit going to be the best days of your life
Amateur’s Guide to Hostel:
1)Like everyone thinks preparing mentally is very easy but no it is NOT EASY. If you have a mental breakdown in the first week let it happen.
2)Donot easily trust everyone.I know this is a wierd thing to say but I think this was the best advice I have ever recieved on the first day of college from fellow batch mates who have lived in hostels in past.Everyone changes with time and situations so definately make friends but donot completly open up to anyone.
3)Always remember why you are there.A lot of times for amateurs specially it is freedom from home but we tend to forget the reason why we are here for.
4)Carry lots and lots of food.Trust me if you are studying even in India the food culture in every state is different. You may not even find the same taste of namkeen you get in your local store to those available there. Also if you feel I shall go and buy it from BigBazaars or Dmarts then you are wrong my dear friend because half the time by the end of the month you would be broke as hell!
4)Always try to take up virtual internship. When you live in a hostel suddenly you start having more time because when living in your home you have family commitments, everyday friends where as here you are just exploring things and we usually get lazy very easily so try and take up some internships which shall keep you busy.
5)Always have a small memory corner in your room.It neednot be over the top decorated but always have some pictures if you are going out for the first time.It definately helps when you are at your lowest.
6)Always follow your gut because you have no parents who would warn you of the wrong friend in the first meeting itself. So always follow your gut and what it has to say.Sometimes vibes get to you faster than the person’s real face does.
7)Always maintain a distance with your warden.Like my warden is a female version of Satan and one of the girls in the hostel made this mistake of being too friendly with her and sharing about her personal relationships with her.The next day Mrs.Satan called her parents up saying your daughter is going out with this boy so take care of her in the earlier stages itself. This taught me a sufficient lesson of never speaking to her again.
My main point of these series is to help people out. When I was going to hostel no one told me all these things would happen. So I have tried to make this series as useful as possible and avoided any kind of pictorial content since it doesn’t require it.The next chapter of these series would be what all to pack and what are some things we usually forget to buy.So stay tuned to for more updates on this series.
