In my opinion, the source of the problem is the lack of investing on recruiting process using IT technology
I had similar experiences with both the author article and Erick and I think both are right.

I completely agree, but this is inherently an extremely difficult task.

Historically, mega-firms have used some pretty awful software that basically scans resumes for keywords. This just leads to every candidate dropping in every technology keyword that they can think of.

Beyond that, traditional recruiters (headhunters) do a pretty mediocre job of recruiting talent. They are just in it for a quick paycheck, and generally just reduce a candidate to a quick tech/skills test. I remember the “PHP” qualification test I took for Robert-Half Technologies almost 10 years ago, it’s another completely dehumanizing experience. Beyond the test, the recruiters were completely incapable of judging my skill set, it was just too far beyond their own.

A newer generation of companies have come along to create hiring/screening as a service, e.g. https://hired.com/

It seems like they produce a better product at scale but there is still the same problem from both sides of the coin.

As an interviewee, you still need to pass some magical bar to be admitted to the group of people that Hired will rep. As an interviewer you still need to vet candidates and perform your due diligence.
