Very well-written, with the novel viewpoint combining the three groups of US citizens (want to remain, want to leave, get abused for it). One way America is exceptional is its power. No other country could have hoped to impose citizenship-based taxation upon all others, as the US has tried to do with FATCA. One can cannot maintain a straight face and imagine Switzerland or Luxemburg or even China tell US banks to find and report upon their citizens in the US, even if they are also US citizens. That America could do this demonstrates how exceptionally powerful it is. It’s the same thing with the Iran agreements: companies worldwide are being forced to shut down deals in Iran to avoid US sanctions. While I’m no expert, this probably extends even to businesses with no US activity, because banks will not accept their transactions. It’s all quite absurd and despite reading a lot about it I found your piece quite refreshing. Many thanks.
