American Fiction(2023) - Cord Jefferson

Racial conflict is still very present in the United States, despite the great progress made to achieve equal opportunities between whites and blacks. However, the perpetuation of certain negative stereotypes of African Americans is an endemic evil of American society that continues to view this population in a reductionist way. In American Fiction, Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) is a writer and literature professor at a Los Angeles university who is disenchanted with the current panorama of the publishing world and the culture of his country in general. His works, despite having great critical prestige, fail to achieve commercial success and his latest manuscript does not get any major publisher interested in its publication. After an incident in class with a student, Monk is “invited” to take a vacation and travels to Boston, where he is originally from, to visit his sister Lisa (Tracee Ellis Ross) and his elderly mother Agnes (Leslie Uggams). The fortuitous and tragic death of his sister will force Monk to take care of his mother, who is showing the first symptoms of Alzheimer's, without much help from his brother Clifford (Sterling K. Brown). In addition, he will begin a romantic relationship with his neighbor Coraline (Erika Alexander) that will disrupt his vision of life. The conflict is generated when Monk, fed up with trying to publish his latest work, which they say is not too “black” and seeing the success…
