A Letter to My Daughter About Young Men

At first I struggled with your posting, especially when you described yourself as an early jackal. But, after thinking a little bit, I realized that your feedback was incredibly useful. In today’s day and age boys are increasingly being pushed into hypermasculinity. Internet porn, the media, all of it works together to give teenage boys the impression that girls are something to acquire, use and discard. I did not realize this until my son hit his teenage years and I started to hear just the littlest bit of how the boys discuss girls in general. “Nice boys” mimic internet stars who talk about young girls as body parts. Well educated sons of highly professional and competent women talk about girls and scoring. Yes, girls do it to, and yes, I watch many of the young women that I am surrounded by every day attempt to outmatch the boys in terms of conquests, casual hookups and cruising through Tinder for an evening’s activity. But you are right to tell your daughter what is waiting for her out there, and the need to be make good choices. Just like we have to tell our sons what is waiting for them out there, and that they have the choice to either treat women as meat, or women as women. Thanks for your posting and for making me think.
