The War Over Data Caps Is Brewing (Again)

One of the major issues is how much data is fair? My ISP, (and the only choice I have in rural America),Armstrong Cable limits cord-cutters to 200 GB per month, which is 100 GB less than what Netflix says someone needs to replace cable TV. Different companies have different data caps, so there’s no true definition of “fairness.”

I strongly believe that data caps are nothing more than a troll toll for those using streaming video services. Even the slightest bit of real competition would cause a quick removal of data caps.

Those that support data caps (the ISPs and think-tanks funded by ISPs) keep saying light usage consumers will not subsidize heavy usage consumers. This is only true if you use exactly what your data cap is. If you ration your Internet usage, and use less data, you are paying a higher price per GB. This is also unfair, as there’s no rollover, and no prorating.
