As someone who has been on a bike since 14, so what, over 30 years now, as well as having a ‘vested interest’ in people riding bikes, I have been watching this debate very closely — I live in Sydney BTW.
While I am working on a piece representing my own views and opinions on this, what I will say, and this is from someone who has spent a lot of time on a bike, is that there are two sides to this argument. Neither is 100% right, neither is 100% wrong but the median sits somewhere in the fuzzy middle.
What I have learnt though is that a lot of the noise, especially from the cycling side, is off the cuff and in some cases lacking in coherent thought. I have expressed this directly to the ‘Bicycle Network’ one of Australia’s largest advocacy groups, of which I am a happy member — there needs to be be more high level representation, and they for the most part are a solid organisation.
There are many factors at play in this game and people need to step back and have a solid think about things. Then, and only then., will we all end up at a place that makes sense to all involved.
