Amazon talks a lot about values of leadership. If we want to lead, we need to make a choice between people and profits. We can sell dangerous surveillance systems to police or we can stand up for what’s right. We can’t do both.

Unfortunately, machine learning apps using these biased datasets will amplify those biases. In the photo example, the dataset had 33% more women than men in photos involving cooking but the algorithm amplified that bias to 68%! This is the result of using discriminative models (as opposed to generative models), which increase the algorithms accuracy by amplifying generalizations (bias) in the data.
