This is a fascinating topic. Many times in science fiction the vast quantities of energy and its sources aren’t seriously considered or analyzed. What I wonder is how is it possible to predict with a great deal of certainty the direction that energy harnessing technologies will take in both short term and long term fields. We know from past experience that predictions about future technological development can be alarmingly inaccurate even within the range of a few decades. It could be that in not much time the concepts we have of the possibilities available to us have altered so dramatically that they are barely recognizable to the modern thinker. On the other hand perhaps scientific understanding gained over the last century has increased our ability to make reasonable predictions that describe with better accuracy the outcomes of future progress in technology. At any rate I think it is important to consider how societies may change with the progress of time. It renders motivation to innovate, create, and hypothesize about the current needs of our societies and how we can address them moving forward. It also inspires the mind to look past the here and now in order to develop greater imaginative ability that we need to be able to adapt in a rapidly changing world. In science models generally require a great deal of revision as time goes on and more information is acquired. The details of this theory will likely also require review with time, which in turn will also help us to predict with more surety and foresight what the future holds. This was a fabulous article, thank you for writing it.
