Nice post.

Im not sure there is a short cut. I think you can achieve 1, 2 and 3 with time and the huge effort involved in going and having chats with everyone, explaining yourself to everyone. Being willing to share the blame for mistakes or deadlines missed “with them”. Agreeing to do collective endeavours even if you feel “your idea” is better.

Basically… sharing the risk of trying to new things *with* them. Not pushing the risk onto them.

During my time at MoJ we never really had the air-cover to be *that much* of a cargo cult. I think you see the benefits of that fact being reaped now.

As for the developer thing. I say all of the above safe in the knowledge that when having these chats you are in a situation where your skill-set is in high demand (both within Govt and outside it).

That fact brings a certain confidence / arrogance. Know that you don’t have to go wagile. Know you don’t have to compromise certain things that you believe will make failure inevitable. You can get work in other places.

But, hold that reality lightly. It is not very endearing.
