Maybe the key is balance. Death people can’t help others and working yourself to death might not be the best solution for the long term. But what is possible is trying to help withing reason. You might be a little selfish, make sure that you have food, home, even some nice things. That you have time for yourself. But also try to give something back. Maybe help the neighbour. Sometimes you don’t need to fix everything at once or help everyone (I’m not sure that is even a good idea), but helping a few persons might mean a big difference for them.

To put it on a practical ground, in my country during the 1960 decade, people went to work in Germany. They were getting out because the situation in Spain was bad. You can think they were leaving the ship and being selfish, those people helped the others. Sure they lived in Germany, but they always got back for hollydays and brough back things that were needed here. They also send money. They didn’t fix the country, but their efforts were felt in their families. And in turn, their families were able to focus on their futures and improving their towns and neighbours.

Think of it as a marathon and not a sprint, you need to keep your strength, remain healthy and not burn out. Even if now the goal seems unreacheable (we haven’t reached it either), each step counts.
