This part resonates with me. It’s where I’ve felt most lost about what’s going on at NPR, post-Kinsey Wilson. It may have been unpopular with some stations and maybe vague to parts of the staff, but KW made a bet. He bet that NPR needed to be an organization that was strong beyond terrestrial radio, and he made investments in that direction: platform/product talent, making NPR play to its competitive advantages (digital audio rather than starting web TV, for example) and new, money-generating verticals that were money generating partly because they existed outside terrestrial radio — NPR Music, Planet Money. I would feel more confident about the organizational direction if I was clear on what bet we were making now, in 2016.
