Mr. Rajesh Prabhakar

Education, in today’s contemporary world, is not merely the learning or memorizing of facts but also cultivating the importance of values and the ideals. Studies have shown that students need to develop valuable skills beyond the conventional three tenets of learning which are often referred to as the 3Rs — reading, writing and arithmetic. Nowadays, when you can have access to a plethora of information, just at the touch of a fingertip, using the leading internet search engine, Google, the purpose and meaning of being educated needs to change accordingly.

So now the question arises: What sort of education is the need of the hour? The answer to this question lies in imparting skill enhancing and value based education. The more successful we are in grasping the art of application of knowledge, the better placed we would be in times to come. Therefore, our focus should shift towards development of skill and making values a priority.

Our country is a developing country and we are, now, on the verge of taking a leap forward to become a developed nation. As education is the driving force for the economic growth and national development, first and the foremost requirement is quantity as well as quality of manpower. So far as quantity is concerned, we would be the youngest nation in the world by 2030. But the main concern is quality of manpower. Majority of the educated and unemployed youth in India are actually unemployable owing to the fact that they are just paper-tigers. This can be redressed if the emphasis is laid on vocational education from the secondary level.

The second most important thing to be kept in mind is moral education. Teachers should emphasize on the overall development of a child, and they should infuse the moral principles in them along with the fundamentals of academic learning. The emphasis should be on the values such as honesty, empathy, sympathy, unconditional love, cooperation, compassion, and most importantly, respect for others.

The value system which was the core of Indian education system in ancient times, somehow, has eroded during the colonial period. Considering this paradigm shift in education system, we must suitably modify our current curriculum to add value based subjects along with skill development to prepare the young generation to face the challenges of future.
