This is such a difficult lesson to learn, particularly because we believe that we can actually change our external world more than we actually can. So we have this mythology that we are masters of our own universe. In fact, pretty much the ONLY thing we are masters of is our mind and our reaction to our circumstances (hence the equivalent happiness factor between paraplegics and lottery winners). If we can practice ways of maintaining equanimity in the face of great joy and great sadness, we can build a sustainable, happy existence.
