A set amount definitely sounds best, whether delivered in a chunk or monthly/annually.

Oh, I don’t feel sorry for the guy at all. What kind of person (a) feels entitled to live the high life on their parents’ money for the rest of their lives, (b) takes their parents to court over it? But if the parents had made it clear exactly what they were and weren’t offering, they wouldn’t have reached this point and their relationship with their son would almost certainly be the better for it. I’m not blaming them as such, just thinking about ways it could have been handled differently.
