It’s amazing how fast time moves in the technology sector.

I had meant to join and become an active member of Medium over 3 years ago after the birth of my daughter. I have always enjoyed writing, but my job has required me to do less and less of it in favor of speedy, acronym-filled emails. I also wanted to write as a way to pause and reflect on the pace of technology change around us.

Not surprisingly, I took a pause on both those two ambitions as I found myself consumed by another fast-moving phenomenon: the growth and development of my little girl.

So, here I am again. After the birth of child #2 (my son). Two time’s a charm, right?

Let me start by introducing myself.

My formal job is working as a marketing manager at Google. I get to help launch products, develop our core messages and design campaigns to grow adoption. The best part of my job is getting to be right in the trenches to invent, observe and critique the most cutting edge developments in computing. This probably explains why I’ve been at the company for so long (over 13 years).

This account will be largely dedicated to my thoughts on the intersections of technology and society. I’ll dig into statistics on the pace of Internet growth and changes in user behavior (something I picked up while developing speeches for Eric Schmidt when he was our CEO). I’ll consider parallels between today’s technology and innovations of the past (a nod to my undergraduate work in Science, Technology & Society (STS) while at Stanford). In particular, I’ll explore how technology both enhances and diminishes our public sphere (inspired by my early career as a journalist and my graduate school research in Media Studies).

I hope you’ll read and actively discuss with me.
