We’re Live

Are u ok? A dm from one of my long-time friends, Adriana. She knew me way before and had a keen skill for noticing when my life was askew, even from far away. She lives by the beach in Santa Barbara now, where she’s a therapist to wealthy college kids…

Synthetic

Today started like any other day by me waking up, drinking a cup of hot tea followed by an ice-cold glass of lemon water, and a quick make-up routine before heading out the door to work. I packed a homemade energy bar for later in the morning since I’m never…

Should We Slow Down AI Development?

Depending on what corner of the internet you’re hanging out in these days, you are likely to find one of the three following groups: people who are absolutely not talking about GPT or OpenAI and do not knowingly interact with AI in their day-to-day lives, people who are enthusiastic about…

Bytes

What is a byte if not a thought? A spark. The firing of your neurons, brain to fingertip. There were once three of us online, yes, hilarious. Only three. Walled gardens of juvenile chaos, attempted learning, and data mischief. Now the device knows more than you know. What does it know that you don’t know yet? And when will you find out? You should be grateful you cannot see all the information moving around you,

Atlas

“Good night, Theo.” “Good night, Mama.” “I’ll see you in the morning.” “Ok, Mama.” She leaned down and whispered into his ear. “I know you’re going to play with Atlas. That’s ok. Just don’t stay up too late, ok?” “Ok, Mama.” Emily got up off the bed, turned off the…

Loving and Raising Boys

My 5-year-old found the card I’d purchased for his father to wish him a happy Valentine’s Day and immediately objected to the idea of my having any Valentine other than him. While this strong-willed child has objections every day, this one felt different. He seemed almost wounded to consider that I could ever love another as much as I love him. He is my younger son, my baby, after all. For all the stories I’ve yet to tell about parenting boys, loving little boys when they’re sweet and all yours brings a joy unlike any other. This feeling of being loved, needed, and exclusively desired is undoubtedly one of the best parts of raising boys. Since I have another son…

Oh, Christmas Tree and Other Things We’d Like to Proclaim

This year’s Christmas tree is the perfect embodiment of our second Christmas in a pandemic. It is closer to death than a “live” tree of ours has ever been, releasing hundreds of needles with every interaction. For years, we’ve bought our tree from the local police department’s tree lot that…

Creative Automation: Software is coming for creative jobs.

There’s a narrative rolling around the tech world and some political circles about the future of work — that many jobs will be displaced in the next ten to fifteen years. The story usually starts with driverless technology and the trucking industry or perhaps digital assistants and AI’s coming servitude…
