(PUN INTENDED!)

COVID19 has disrupted our lives including our beauty rituals. Last week, we talked about rice. Today I’m going to continue sharing with you how to get your beauty fix, and without breaking the bank. Yes, I’m talking about free to nearly nothing. The best part of this is that these beauty DIY’s are already in your cupboard so you don’t have to social distance at Trader Joe’s. You heard me right, I said all ingredients will come from your everyday foods also known as your quarantine stash.

Not only will I be giving you different Quarantine DIY beauty treatments, but I will also compare our DIY to an actual high end brand. So you can have these in your beauty arsenal. So get ready to start pampering yourself.

Today’s DIY is something that everyone was buzzing about a few years ago. I am sure we all have seen this facial trending all over the internet. It is known as the famous “grandma mask”. This treatment makes you look old at first because the mask tightens your skin so much that it actually looks super wrinkly but when you rinse it off, your skin is softer and tighter. Everyone from the Kardashians to Drew Barrymore have been infamous for trying this treatment and loving it.

So if you suffer from oily or dry skin, acne, cystic acne, large pores or fine lines look no further. Can you guess what the next magical ingredient that’s lurking around in your kitchen is? If you guessed a good old fashion egg, you were correct. Now that I have your attention I will tell you what good an old fashioned egg can do for your skin. The egg mask is compared to the Hanacure all in one facial set valued at $110 plus tax for only 4 uses. While in comparison, you can buy a carton of eggs for as low as $1.99 and get 12 uses. Not sure how you can beat that.

As you probably already know, there are two parts of an egg: the egg white and the yolk. The egg white, is what we will be using for our beauty treatment. The egg white is the clear liquid inside the egg containing albumins, mucoproteins, lysozyme and globulins. Meaning, the egg white face mask functions as humectant, which is why it’s great for all skin types, dry, oily or combination skin. Being that skin is able to bind more moisture, it can temporarily fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Thus, causing a skin tightening effect. As if that wasn’t enough the egg white also contains a protein called lysozyme. Lysozyme helps with the breakdown of certain acne causing bacteria. Lysozyme also helps with absorbing excess oil in the skin causing pores to be clogged and appear larger in size. When absorbing the excess oil the pores seem to look smaller. It’s important to note, pores do not shrink since pores do not have muscle around to allow them to open or close. By removing the dirt the appearance might look like it shrunk.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Egg

TOOL’S NEEDED:

  • Bowl
  • Small Whisk or fork
  • Small bowl
  • Facial brush
  • Face Towel

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Crack the egg, and separate the yolk.
  • In a bowl whisk the egg white until foamy
  • Take your facial brush and apply a thin coat on your skin. Keep building layers.
  • Be sure to avoid getting the egg whites on the mouth.
  • Let dry for 30 min or until hard and you can’t speak because skin feels so tight
  • Pat with lukewarm water, rinse off the egg mask.
#HOMEMADE #MAYO

As the second part of our #Zerowaste motto — Oftentimes so many recipes call for egg whites and are left with the all mighty yellow yolk. Most people discard them, but not in this home. Again, where there is a will there’s a way, so many recipes come to mind like custards, so many sauces like mayo, hollandaise sauce etc.. We will be using the leftover egg yolk to make HomeMade Mayonnaise ;)

Duration: 5 min — Prep Time: 5 min —Serving Size: ¾ of a cup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 leftover egg yolk
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt, add to taste if more is wanted
  • ¾ cup refined oil of choice, use what you have (I use avocado oil)

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • 2 Medium Size Bowl
  • Spoon measurer
  • Small Jar for storage
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Mixer / blender or whatever tool you have to mix.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine egg yolk, lemon juice, mustard, and ½ teaspoon of salt in a medium bowl.
  2. Whisk until blended and bright yellow, it should take about 30 seconds.
  3. Now in a separate bowl add ¼ cup of oil to the yolk. Whisking constantly adding a few drops of oil at a time for about 4 minutes.
  4. Gradually add the remaining ½ cup of oil. *IMPORTANT must add the oil slowly, whisk constantly until thick like mayo. Use right away or store in the container for up to 2–3 day in the fridge or freeze or up to a week or two.

VARIATIONS FOR MAYO :

  1. For Garlic Mayo, Add 2 garlic cloves,
  2. For Basil mayo, Add ¼ cup basil for basil mayo
  3. For Chipotle Mayo, Add 1 teaspoon of dried chipotle chili flakes

Also, if you have a garden or plants you can use the egg shells as fertilizer. Now this is truly a #zero waste ingredient.

My final thoughts on our DIY Egg white face mask along with our #zerowaste approach including recipe. As you by now are fully aware of the benefits that egg whites have to offer us when used externally. I must clarify, I am talking about external use ONLY, because I don’t want to confuse anyone. As this is not a post about egg white nutrition. Not taking away the nutritional value the egg white has to offer when cooked. But again, this is a beauty article. My purpose is to show you the beauty side of the egg and in particular the egg white. With that being said, we have identified some of the key basic beneficial proteins the egg white contains. These beneficial proteins can help with plumping fine lines and wrinkles due to increased skin’s hydration. We also learned that the egg white contains a protein that helps destroy bacteria on the face, helping the fight against acne. Among its accolades its most known for its effects for tightening the skin aka “The Grandma Facial” . While the Egg White face mask may provide many benefits to your skin, it’s important to remember that you may not get the same benefits of using a professionally formulated skin care product always. I have provided you with a comparable product. However there are other Professional grade products that may contain a higher percentage of Lysozyme which is the ingredient this DIY is targeting. Like I mentioned before everyone’s skin is different, the needs of the skin can vary from person to person and a lot goes into skin care and the product associated with those needs. Some of those factors are lifestyle, diet, sleep, work environment, genetics etc…

In conclusion, I am not saying brands are bad and steer clear from them. I am saying there are many factors that go into brand skin care products. Firstly, there is alot research and testing that occurs. Also, because cosmetic companies have professionally formulated their products meaning made in a controlled lab environment with secret formulations what they all believe is the next best thing. There is definitely validity in those products for example, professional products have the capability to infuse the product with higher concentrations of active ingredients while keeping the products safe , stable and preserving its constitution. Which is a great thing in some cases. But my Motto is “less is more” With that being said I still stand by my DIY Egg White face mask , and I believe it is truly another beauty secret worth sharing. This treatment is very effective, natural, inexpensive and as fresh as can be. Best part of all you can choose your ingredients, like the type of egg you choose to use, organic, free range or not … I think there is a lot of freedom and intentions when you get to know your beauty routine. And the Homemade Mayo always makes it super worth it for me. Would love to hear your feedback. Enjoy!

VOILA, enjoy your glow. Tag me during your treatment and I’ll support you. @Elizabeth_Molina and use the #HOMEGLOW
