We’ve all said it.
“I don’t know what to write about.”
As a teacher, I heard it over and over and over again.
And I’ve said it. In fact, I say “I don’t know what to write,” and I write, “I don’t know what to write,” all the time.
As a writer, “I don’t know what to write” is an extremely powerful sentence!
When I first started writing, I became obsessed with the idea of “discovery.” I started writing when I was about 32. A mentor of mine told me I was a good writer and that’s all it took.
I had always been told that I was a bad writer. I was told that by the red pen that my teachers wielded over me and my papers in school. I learned to hate writing.
And then all of a sudden, my mentor said, “You’re a good writer, Rich.”
I was hooked! That one sentence changed my life!
I won’t bore you with all those details. Maybe someday I will, but not right now.
Tonight, I want to write about what you need to do when you don’t know what to write.
Like I said, I became obsessed with the idea of discovery. I still am.
I put that obsession to my writing. I created what I call “the discovery draft” for writing.
Remember how you used to have to write a “rough draft” for your papers in school. They would be due on Friday, so you’d stay up a half hour later on Thursday, get some nonsense on paper and submit it for points on Friday?
We all did it.
It’s okay to admit it!
Anyway, rough drafts are completely ineffective when trying to figure out what to write. They’re completely ineffective for any type of writing. Writing has to have a purpose and an audience.
So if you’re struggling to figure out what to write, here’s what you do…
Open a word document, or a fresh sheet of paper and write, “I have to figure something out to create content. I don’t know what I’m going to write or talk about. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write. I don’t know what to write.”
Eventually, your brain will get tired of writing “I don’t know what to write,” and at the same time, your mind will ping on something in the back of your mind and that will be your content piece.
This system has never failed me! I’m telling you. It has never failed me.
If you’re struggling to figure out what piece of content you want to write, set your mind free by allowing it to not know. Once you free your mind and allow it to not know what to write, it will figure out what to write, because you’ve relieved the pressure.
Once you stop chasing the subject, the subject will come to you.
It’s difficult to explain any more in a blog post. That’s why I’m creating the videos to go with these posts as well!
Make sure you read and watch both! I would greatly appreciate your support by following me, becoming a fan, sending me a comment — you know the drill!
If you’re getting value from my posts, let me know on Medium and YouTube! If you make your comments on the actual channels, that will help me a lot. It will help me grow my channels so that I can reach and help more people!
