A Bridge Too Far?

Across the River Thames in London, there are 35 bridges. One of them is Albert Bridge, which opened in 1873. It’s one of the most attractive bridges across the Thames.

As you can see, it is highly ornamented and is, in fact, one of the most richly detailed bridges in London. In the background, you can see Battersea Bridge, a very different style of bridge.

Albert Bridge is a type of suspension bridge. Actually it’s a hybrid between a cable-stayed bridge and a suspension bridge, after being altered to strengthen it between 1884 and 1887.

The Trembling Lady

When large numbers of pedestrians crossed over it, people would feel the vibrations. These vibrations were even more severe when troops marched across from the nearby Chelsea Barracks. That’s how it acquired its nickname of The Trembling Lady.

There’s a notice at either end, which warns:
