Scheduled Crunchyroll Maintenance: Downtime on Wednesday, June 13 starting at 2am Pacific Time

By: Simon Obstbaum, Ellation CTO

Over 10 years ago, our Crunchyroll founders set off on a journey to share their passion for anime with the rest of the world. The early days were a story to tell, and it’s been a journey since — more recently, we crossed 1 million subscribers, started connecting with our community through events like Crunchyroll Expo, Crunchyroll Movie Nights, and Anime Awards, and ventured further internationally via linear TV. We’re both humbled and thankful to see how much anime has grown, so much so, that we’ve been fortunate to contribute $100 million and counting back to the anime industry.

That all said, our growth has not come without challenge. Our tech stack has been architected to account for growth and spikes in traffic, yet the pace of our current growth has been exceeding even our most optimistic forecasts (thank you!). Given this, we greenlit a significant investment last year to modernize our service and infrastructure, as it became clear that our existing data center was not sufficient for our new trajectory. A number of initiatives have taken place in the background, including a move of our video delivery to the new cloud infrastructure six months ago. We’re now approaching a critical point for this data migration, where we will need several hours of scheduled downtime for Crunchyroll; this is taking place today, Wednesday, June 13th.

What Does This Mean For Our Community?

On June 13th, starting at 2am Pacific Time, Crunchyroll will be unavailable on all platforms (desktop, mobile, living room) for approximately 12 hours, and anyone attempting to access the site (on desktop) will see a maintenance page until the work is complete. We chose this window of time, as our data indicates that we see the lowest global traffic during these hours.

Can I access Crunchyroll content elsewhere?

If you are looking to watch your favorite Crunchyroll shows during this time, our other subscription service, VRV will still be available for U.S. fans (if your Crunchyroll account is already linked, your Premium membership will be recognized). Note that all features (e.g. Crunchyroll News, Crunchyroll Store, Watch List, Manga) will not be available through VRV, but you will be able to search for shows and watch through VRV’s platform. Today’s simulcasts may be affected on both platforms.

As soon as our work is complete, we will inform our community via social channels, and fans can access Crunchyroll as they normally would. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we’re optimistic that this will help us to be much more scalable and resilient moving forward. Thank you for your patience!
