I completely agree. I’m a mom too, and I remember struggling so much with making homemade baby food. That’s exactly why I created Raised Real. Our mission is to make feeding babies real food as easy as possible by sending parents all the food and tools they need to make homemade baby food straight to their doorsteps.
With that said, if pouches are your only option, there are a few things you can do to make sure you’re choosing the best of the lot:
- Read the first three ingredients: The front and back should match. If the first three ingredients don’t match the front label claims, put it back. Also, apple purée is very different from real apple. See next tip.
- Know how it’s made: Shelf stable isn’t nutritionally stable. If it’s on a shelf, it’s been heat processed and is mostly sugary syrup. Refrigerated pouches aren’t heat processed, but still lose many nutrients by sitting on a shelf for up to 30 days.
- Know the numbers: Some store-bought baby food can contain over 15g of sugar. Try to find ones that are under 6g of sugar, and can provide a nutritional balance of 100 calories, 2–3g protein and 30% healthy fat. This how I’ve made all our Raised Real recipes.
I hope this helps! No matter what you end up doing, feel good about your choices, because we’re all doing the best we can.
