My Most Memorable Inspiration in Reinventing My Life

Article by Ellen Goldfarb

I don’t remember exactly what year it was, but I had a chat with my mom. That might not seem to be so unusual, but on a particular day I said to my mom, “if you can do it, I can do it.” Let me begin, my mom worked until she was 95 years old. She absolutely loved teaching at a college. She was an assistant professor at a college in art education. The students all loved her, and she loved ALL her students. The reason for this is, because she loved her job.

I had retired and didn’t find my life very enjoyable. I didn’t have a plan of what I wanted to do. I had structure when I was working at a regular job, I retired, because we were relocating to another area in Florida, and there went my structure. Now that I had time for myself I didn’t know what to do. I could have spent my time weaving on my floor loom (my other passion) but without structure my creative aspect of me doesn’t come out. I was just hanging around and not doing much of anything. That was going on for years. We, my husband and I, moved back to where we originally lived in Florida. We moved into a 55 and up community. I decided hang out with the women in the community and did what they did and I would be happy. Well I wasn’t. It was one afternoon when my mom was visiting us that we had had that talk, like we always do, but this talk hit me in a special way. I said to my mom, “If you can do it, so can I.” What this means, if she can continue to work being in her 90’s so can I. She was such an inspiration for me. She wasn’t just my mom, but she was an awesome woman. You would have had to meet her to see.

So from that point on I tried to figure out what I absolutely love to do. That’s the key in rediscovering your world. My love at the time was weaving. I am a woven fabric designer. I have been weaving for over 50 years. This might sound crazy, but it is part of who and what I am. I wound up registering for a marketing course so I would finally learn how to market my wovens. I was all excited about taking this course. Once I registered I found out there was a prerequisite course I had to take with the marketing course. I resisted but saw there was no way out. The course was a Basic Coaching Class. I fell in love with the coaching. I wanted to be a Life Coach.

You see what can happen? I was totally unaware of how I would feel after taking the prerequisite basic coaching class. I fell in LOVE with the idea of being a Life Coach. I had no idea that this little basic coaching class would change my entire life. Now I had a problem with what to do with my life. I sat myself down and asked myself as question. Do I become a life coach and not weave anymore? My heart said, “No.” Okay, do I weave and not become a life coach, my heart said, “NO!” I said to myself okay, I am both. I am a life coach and a woven fabric designer. Wow! I had one huge smile on my face! Yippee!!

Okay, let me say something about how I reinvented my world. If I didn’t have that talk with my mom, and if I hadn’t decided to take a course in marketing with a prerequisite course of basic coaching, I would not be a life coach today. I truly believe there are reasons for things to happen the way they do. All I am saying is you never know what idea, thought, talk, course, movie, and interaction can help you redesign a more fulfilling exciting world for yourself!
