All this technology and resources and we still let people live in squalor. Why?
At first, this piece was going to be hit a piece against our favorite billionaires we that we love to hate. With a title like that, how could it not? But the more I thought about the reasons popping into my head, it’s not looking so good for my fellow slackers. I don’t think we can blame this one on just the 1% alone. Mind you, I am a functioning slacker and I do appreciate what a good work ethic can get you. I’m not hating on Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos for having all that money. I’m hating on them for their attitudes towards it. But no two people can solve the problem for hundreds of millions of people. Or can they? In our day and age of great technological feats, I just don’t understand why the bar for living conditions has to be set so low, when it doesn’t have to be.
Per Habitat for Humanity UK, there are 900 million people living in slums or more politely referred to as “informal settlements” all over the world.
So here are my top 10 reasons why we can’t get it together to lift people out of slums.
- The people in the slums don’t want to move.
- All the available housing offered are far away or undesirable.
- No support from the locals
- Not enough money available to the cause
- No support from the government
- The general population don’t care because they are confident it will never be them
- More will just pop up after you clear an area
- There will always be people living in squalor
- They are making other people very rich by being very poor.
- No Leader for the cause
Hang to your seats…guess what my next piece is going to be? Why Yes! I will be rebutting some of these excuses.
