It’s the debut festival of 2018, and we’re dissecting the line-up for you

Courtney Barnett thinking about how good APE Presents will be…

Festival line-ups are the stress of the summer. With just one of you and 20+ artist names, it can be daunting stuff. With just one of you, 20+ artist names and ¾ of them being white men with guitars, it really is nearing impossible. Don’t fret, we’ve done it before and we’re doing it again — these are the five acts you NEED see at APE Presents at London’s Victoria Park from June 1–3, with Catfish and the Bottlemen, The National and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds heading up each day. We are almost too good to you.

The National

1. They released their first single a full five years after the inception of the band. That’s quality not quantity at its finest.

2. “Our songs are about death, but in really fun ways” is something they’ve said.

3. You’re guaranteed at LEAST 3/5 fully committed beards.

St Vincent

1. She dropped the best twisted-pop album of 2017. Hold me to that.

2. She named her 2007 album Marry Me after the recurring arrested development joke. A truly relatable fave.

3. She performed the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack tune Mystery of Love with Sufjan Stevens at The Oscars. She is a SAINT. Well, it’s in her name for God’s sake.

Patti Smith

1. As I’m writing this it’s been 40 years to the day since her first release. It is legit a sign.

2. Her boss status is through the roof. Why? Morrissey grew his hair long in the 1970s to emulate her.

3. She is the Godmother of punk. Hands down. And her book Just Kids is basically required reading.

Courtney Barnett

1. She busked in the street outside Camden Town station when she released her album. Sign of a true G.

2. She’s come ALL THE WAY from Australia so, we owe it to her really.

3. She has an album called Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. PREACH. IT.

Broken Social Scene

1. The time signature in 7/4 (Shoreline) is the only one I ever want to hear, ever.

2. Their name is me at everyone each time I go ‘out out’.

3. They fluctuate from six to 19 members. That’s the kinda fluidity we are here for in 2018.
