Lyrics from the album

GNILTSUH ablum art

On November 12, 2008, I posted this video to YouTube. It’s a 43 second clip of me explaining the concept of the “Hustling Backwards” album. I didn’t think it would take 10 years to complete the project but, I finished the album December 31, 2018.

I was performing songs scheduled to be on the album back then and was ready to apply all I learned while creating my first two studio albums (Ain’t No Pillows on the Road and Better Than I Can Tell You) to help ensure the quality of this next project. Needless to say, the process took longer to finish than I originally anticipated.

I am a lyrical musician. The lyrics I write are often dense. I want people to ‘get it’ once I’ve included them in song form. “Thed Weller” is actually the moniker I earned performing my raps as poems at open mics around Birmingham, Alabama. This process of testing my lyrics out made sense to me since RAP music is Rhythm And Poetry to begin with. Often as listeners, we are so intrigued with the music that accompanies the words in songs, the meanings in the songs can be missed. It is with that same spirit I am releasing the words to my songs a few days before the actual album is released.

There are a total of 8 songs on this project. Six of the songs were written in 2018 and two of the songs are throwbacks to when the project was first conceived over ten years ago.

Here are the lyrics in the order in which they appear on the album. It is important to note that this project was designed to be enjoyed in reverse sequence as well as in the order in which it was placed on the album.

Enjoy.
