October 1st 2015, 10:38am. Panic broke out in the halls of Umpqua community college as the sound of gunshots rang through the halls. 13 people have been reported dead with another 20 critically injured. Police state that the shooter, a 20 year old male, is deceased and the threat has been “neutralized.” The shooter who was apparently acting alone in this incident seemed to have tipped off the community via 4Chan post that can be viewed here.

It is speculated that the motive behind the shootings were simply to gain attention however there is much information that has yet to be uncovered. The Orgonian recently stated:

“While it’s not yet clear whose bullets took the shooter down, an expert in mass killings said that such gunmen rarely exchange gunfire with police.

“Shootouts are rare,” said Professor Jay Corzine at the University of Central Florida, in Orlando. “But they do happen (roughly 12 to 15 percent of the time). Most of these people who stick around and wait for the cops to show up, it’s a suicide by cop thing. They know they’re not going to win that."

Students report hearing gunshots and even witnessing the death of a professor. USA Today reports the story of a student, Kortney Moore, saying that:

“Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head, apparently after the gunman came into the classroom. At that point, Moore told the newspaper, the shooter ordered everyone to get on the ground. The shooter then asked people to stand up and state their religion and then started firing, Moore said.” Full story here.

Uninjured students and staff were safely evacuated to the Douglas County fairgrounds while those who were injured were rushed to hospitals. The country has responded to this by calling once more for the congress to act on the issue of gun control and a change in the rights to owning firearms.

Representative Mike Honda recently tweeted:

“142 school shootings in the US since Sandy Hook — that’s nearly 1 per week — @Everytown. We need a pro-public safety agenda in Congress.”

There are many facts that are still unclear with this tragic incident however there is still an active team of police, medics, FBI and K9 units that are continuing to work on the situation.
