“Black Sabbath Meets Afrobeat”

Here Lies Man does it well

Here Lies Man is a loud rock band, with influences of metal, psychedelic, and Afrobeat. Led by Chico Mann, aka Marcos Garcia (who also plays in Antibalas), the band members come from a variety of musical backgrounds. They include Kris Castro on keys (Chola Orange), John Maramba on bass (plays/ed with Yuna, Raphael Saadiq, others), Richi Panta on congas (Very Be Careful), and Geoff Mann on drum set (played in Antibalas, others).

Their approach to this kind of stoner metal, fuzzy psychedelic vibe, is what makes this group unique. Here Lies Man has been described as, Black Sabbath meets Afrobeat. Guest percussionist Eddie Valencia (Quitapenas, Yanga), who performed with them on September 23rd at the El Rey, stated that their songs are in clave, and that’s something that sets apart this band. They only have a couple songs posted, and I’m looking forward to hear a whole album.

The photo’s dark but whatever, I like the Laker colors. That evening, they opened for Buyepongo and Grupo Fantasma.
