Bitmain’s demands have continued to shift. They went from requesting hard fork code to promoting deliberately incompatible software which ended up suffering from serious security issues, to paying other developer teams directly to develop incompatible software, to insisting on coupling a soft fork and hard fork activation (a protocol impossibility) after a private meeting in New York where many of the other participants believed the goal was to activate SegWit in its current form first.
There is no reason for me to believe a viable deal can be reached. Meanwhile, innovation continues to suffer while Bitmain continues to profit at the expense of most of the rest of the ecosystem. Therefore, the time has come to continue on ahead, with or without Bitmain.
