I recall that while in school we were taught about the Underground Railroad, safehouses, and Harriet Tubman, yet we never heard any stories of what life was like for escaped slaves in Canada nor what life is like for their descendants today.

I have met a few Canadians and their attitudes about First Nations is spot on to what you witnessed. Similar to what I saw amongst my Aussie friends re: Aboriginal people. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
