Should Sofia Coppola Stay In Her White Lane? Sure. But That Means Acknowledging Her Racism.

In a collaborative art form such as the movies, the argument that one should “stay in their lane” or that they “do not have purchase” on a given experience seems empty. If Coppola can´t trust herself with creating meaningful and thoughtful characters of color she could, no, should collaborate with writers who can. The movies present us with the opportunity to bring people of diverse background together to tell stories which honor multiple experiences. Why this aspect of film making is not used more often escapes me. To me, the question isn´t: “Should Coppola have included the two women of color which were in the original story?” but, “Given the collaborative nature of film making, what excuse did she have not to?”

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
