Finishing Out my Awesome August
My Accomplishments for the Week Ending 8/26/18
Good afternoon! This has been another interesting week for me — a lot of great accomplishments, but also found out something not so great. Not going to let it get me down though…
Finished Reading “Zen in the Art of Writing”
“What? Already? Didn’t you just start it last week?”
Yep — it was a quick read! Only took me 12 days to read. It was an interesting book though, Ray Bradbury has some interesting pieces of advice. Here are a few of my favorites:
“The faster you blurt, the more swiftly you write, the more honest you are.”
His point here I think is that if you write quickly, without thinking about what you’re writing, you’re more honest and you’ll get more ideas down in a short period of time. At least that’s what I got out of it. I, like many of you I’m sure, tend to think as I write, even when I pre-write. I’ve been working on trying not to do that — to just get all my ideas down and then go back and edit them later.
“…if you are writing without zest, without gusto, without love, with-out fun, you’re only half a writer.”
I agree with this so much. Sometimes I only feel like half a writer because a lot of the stuff I write, like the paid writing I do for some of the websites I’m working on now, is about subjects I have no interest in. I try to pick up assignments on topics I do have an interest in, like law or health, but sometimes they aren’t there. I love writing for Medium, and writing posts for my websites, because it allows me to write about topics I’m really interested in.
“Not to write, for many of us, is to die.”
I agree with this too. I hate when I have to go a day without writing, even if I’m just handwriting something in my travel journal because I don’t have access to the Internet.
Finished my CopyPress assignments and got rated on them.
I did pretty well on my first two CopyPress articles — I got an A- on one and an A on the other. The editor was very helpful regarding the changes I needed to make. One thing I kept having problems with was attributing images. They wanted images specifically from Flickr, so I had to go through and find images and use their format for applying attribution. Both these articles were about travel — it’s something like to do, so I enjoyed writing the articles.
Passed my Content Marketing Certification for HubSpot
I’ve been working on going through HubSpot’s free Content Marketing Certification. I already know quite a bit about content marketing — after all, I own three websites and write posts for those websites, as well as several others — but I thought it might be helpful to go through the certification. I did learn a few tidbits that I think will be helpful as I work on ramping up my freelance writing business. I also want to eventually help others with their content marketing needs by taking their content and re-purposing it into other types of content. Check out my certificate:
Started reading “Writing Places: The Life Journey of a Writer and Teacher” by William Zinsser.
I’ve only read a little bit of this so far, but it looks interesting. William Zinsser talks about different places he’s worked and taught.
The One Not So Good Thing That Happened
I found out that I’ve been suspended from Get a Copywriter, a site I’ve been doing some writing on for a few months now. I was kind of surprised, it happened out of the blue and with no warning. I emailed them to find out why I’d been suspended, and was told it was because my average rating was below their threshold. I did have one assignment that I got a low rating on, so that’s probably what brought it down. I found this out right around the time I got my first assignment for CopyPress though, so I’m not worried about it. I also have quite a bit of work to do for my proofreading client right now, so I’m not hurting for work at the moment.
That’s it for this past week. Not sure what the coming week will bring, but I do know it’s going to be short. Kevin and I are heading up to Boone, North Carolina on Friday for Labor Day weekend. So if I don’t get to post next week, everyone have a great Labor Day!
