There Is Such a Thing as Too Much Tank
War Is Boring

The Maus was overweight and underpowered, in the tradition of the Tiger I, Tiger II, and Jagdtiger tank destroyer. Not only would it have not been fast enough to be tactically effective, it would have been reliant on much less-armored supply trucks to keep it in fuel and ammunition.
An example ignored by this article is the Panther: it had thicker armor than the Tiger, sloped based on lessons from the T-34, and it had enough horsepower. The failing of the Panther was simply of overengineering: too few were produced and they were rushed into service with immature transmissions, so attrition was particularly hard on them.
